Based upon the stellar reputation of J.Hill & Co. operations and institutional knowledge borne from a century of coffee production, the World Coffee Research Foundation established an initiative with J.Hill & Co. in order to provide critically important research for the promotion of sustainable coffee production amidst the ongoing economic and climatic transformations that currently impact this industry. In February 2015, a 50 year lease was granted on a portion of the J.Hill Flor Amarilla Farm for the specific purpose of providing a “laboratory” to study various aspects of coffee cultivation . In addition, the Regional Headquarters of the organization is currently housed at J.Hill & Co. a decision that illuminates the significance of this collaborative effort.

Located near the city of Santa Ana, El Salvador, J.Hill & Co. enjoys access to the rich volcanic soil and moderate temperatures that have created the idyllic conditions to make this area one of the country’s most prolific coffee production locales. After more than 100 years of leadership and collaboration among coffee growers located in this important region, J.Hill & Co. consistently remains one of Central America’s preeminent producers of high quality coffee.

James Hill, Founder

English-born James Hill arrived in Central America in the late 1800 ́s as a merchant and while traveling the region became enchanted by the flavor of local coffee, particularly that coming from El Salvador ́s Santa Ana region. Coupling his commercial background with his newfound appreciation for this coffee generated a vision which allowed him to see a fantastic economic opportunity in El Salvador’s nascent coffee cultivation industry.

Based upon his emerging passions, he began to cultivate coffee and soon produced world class, export quality beans from the rich volcanic soil of the region. Through these experiences, he became one the leading promoters of the “Bourbon” variety of coffee which remains the signature brand of his adopted home country. As his efforts achieved more success and production increased, his coffee mill “Las Tres Puertas” in 1896 was founded on the outskirts of Santa Ana.

In 1901, his vision and efforts received international recognition as coffee from J.Hill & Co. earned a silver medal at New York’s Pan-American Exposition. This initial success and ongoing leadership in the coffee cultivation industry solidified his legacy as J.Hill & Co. remains one of the preeminent coffee producers in Central America.

Looking to the Future

During the past 125 years, James Hill’s vision has spawned an industry that has become an integral part of El Salvador’s cultural and economic history. For generations, coffee production has sustained entire communities and given El Salvador a precious commodity to be marketed worldwide during this era marked by increasingly globalization. And even though market forces and climate change have impacted this critical industry’s viability, J.Hill & Co. continues to strive for excellence and work tirelessly to maintain their commitment to the legacy of their family enterprise.
